L'acne \u00e8 una malattia delle unit\u00e0 pilosebacee (strutture della pelle costituite dal follicolo pilifero e dalla ghiandola sebacea che lo accompagna). La forma pi\u00f9 comune di acne \u00e8 chiamata \"acne vulgaris\" (\"acne normale\"). Una quantit\u00e0 eccessiva di sebo, insieme alle cellule morte della pelle, ostruisce i follicoli piliferi. Sotto il poro ostruito si crea un ambiente perfetto per la moltiplicazione del batterio Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes), che reagisce ai batteri infiammandosi e causando danni visibili alla pelle. L'acne \u00e8 pi\u00f9 comune su viso, petto, schiena, spalle e braccia.
\nLe lesioni cutanee pi\u00f9 comuni causate dall'acne sono: brufoli, comedoni, punti neri, pustole, noduli e cisti. Cicatrici evidenti e antiestetiche possono rimanere sulla pelle anche dopo la scomparsa dell'acne.
\nL'acne \u00e8 molto comune durante la pubert\u00e0 come risposta anomala alle normali quantit\u00e0 di testosterone, ormone maschile. Nella maggior parte delle persone, questa risposta si indebolisce con il tempo, per cui l'acne di solito scompare dopo i 20 anni. Tuttavia, non \u00e8 possibile prevedere il tempo necessario per la scomparsa dell'acne. Alcune persone continuano a soffrire di acne fino ai quarant'anni.<\/p>\n
Il P. acne produce porfirina come parte del suo ciclo vitale.
